THE LARGEST CHOCOLATE PLANT IN THE WORLD

At one time chocolate was a treat that only rich people could afford to buy, but a young man from Pennsylvania changed all that! Milton S. Hershey, who was born in 1857 near a place called Derry Church, PA, dreamed of making a good milk chocolate that did not cost a lot of money He became successful making caramels in Lancaster, PA. In 1900, he sold the business and started to spend all his time making chocolate. Soon he decided to build a chocolate factory

Mr. Hershey built his factory in Derry Church (now Hershey) because he knew that he would find loyal, hardworking people there. He also knew that he would have lots of fresh milk from dairy farms in the area for his milk chocolate bars. He started building his factory in 1903. It was finished in 1905. Today that factory is the largest chocolate plant in the world. It has more than 2 million square feet of space.
